2016 AAU Golf National Championship
The 2016 AAU National Championship was played June 13th – 16th on the Palmer Course at Reunion Resort in Orlando, FL. New records were set in both boys and girls competition. The first two rounds were Stroke Play competition where individual age groups 18/under. 14/under, 11/under, 9/under and 7/under were awarded big trophies for the winners and AAU National Champion Medals: Gold for 1st place, Silver 2nd place and Bronze 3rd place
Individual record scores were set by Chase Nowicki from Windemere, FL in the 18/under boys set records of 137 for the two days of qualifying, a new record of (34 – 31) 65 for 18 holes and 31 set the record for 9 holes. Excellent scoring and good competition.
The individual scores from the Stroke Play event were used for placing for the AAU National Championship Match Play Event. This Match Play competition is now the format used by Colleges for their competition and now the AAU Junior Golfers will experience the future of College Golf. This year there were new records set also for the Match Play competition. The Boys Final Match was an example of what good competition can do when to win a hole they had to birdie the hole. The junior players were Chase Nowicki and Zachary Bariso from Boca Raton, FL. The Match went to the last hole when Zachary birdie on the 17th hole gave him a 1 Up Championship and win The Yost Cup. For the final Match play individual scores, Chase shot 69 and Zack shot 68 on the Palmer Course.
The girls competition was just as competitive with the best individual Stroke Play score by Manon Donche-Gay from France playing from the Sorenstam Academy Reunion Resort with a scores of 76 – 74, 150 total for the two days of qualifying. Viola Greenwood from Cookeville, TN was runner-up with a two day total of 158.
There was one new record set in the girls age 9/under when Bella Dovhey played her 2nd day 9 hole score of 1 under par 35. This was the only under par round Stroke Play for the girls.
The Girls Match play was also amazingly competition and Viola the defending 2015 National Champion from last year found her game in the Match Play when she shot a final round of 2 under par, 70 to win 2 up over Manon Donche-Gay to win The Yost Cup again.
Overall this was a great competitive AAU Junior Golf Tournament. The players enjoyed the format and everyone is looking forward to next year and a return to Reunion Resort. The course was in very good condition and that added to the good competition. The service and cooperation from Reunion Pro Shop and Dining area was outstanding. We’ll see you next year.
